ABOUT ZELL AM SEE & SALZBURG
The province of Salzburg covers a surface of 7,154
km2, which makes it the sixth-largest of Austria´s nine
provinces (8.5 % of the national territory). Salzburg owes its
name to rich salt deposits ("white gold"), which created
its wealth in medieval times. Salzburg borders Germany in the
northeast, Upper Austria in the north and northeast, Styria in
the southeast, Carinthia and East Tirol in the South, Italy along
a few kilometers and Tirol in the southwest. Almost a third (144,000)
of the about 495,000 inhabitants of Salzburg province live in
the regional capital Salzburg. Salzburg province consists of the
city of Salzburg with its own statute and the five political districts
Hallein, Salzburg-surroundings, St. Johann im Pongau, Tamsweg
and Zell am Ziller as well as 119 municipalities, among these besides the city of Salzburg 3 towns and 29 market municipalities.
Salzburg´s regional beauty attracts guests
from all over the world. Salzachtal Valley offers a unique spectacle
of nature: the Krimmler Falls. Thirteen glaciers feed the falls
which fall 395 meters. Lake Koenigssee, the Hallein salt mine and
some of the world´s largest ice cave´s, situated in
the Tennengebirge mountain range, opposite the Burg Hohenwerfen
castle, are also among the attractions of the Province of Salzburg.

Salzburg is located in the heart of Austria, in
the middle of Europe. The city has approximately 145.000 inhabitants
and lies 436 m above sea level. Salzburg is divided by the river
Salzach. On the south side of Salzach you will find the "Oldtown"
of Salzburg underneath the Mönchsberg and the Hohensalzburg
Fortress. North of the
river you will find the Kapuzinerberg and the baroque Castle
Mirabell with itīs beautiful garden.
Salzburg is rich in tradition, history and culture. The old
town was declared Cultural Heritage of the World by the
UNESCO in 1997. The lovely
scenery combined with the city's carefully preserved majestic Baroque

scholar, Alexander von Humbolt, prized Salzburg to be "one
of the three most beautiful regions of the world."
Salzburg's unmistakable silhouette is dominated by the Fortress
of Hohensalzburg, which has successfully guarded over the city
for more than 900 years. Today, it is considered to be the best
preserved Medieval Fortress in all of Central Europe, and offers
visitors a chance to step back in time - to explore its numerous
chambers or to relax and listen to the music which the city of
Salzburg is well-known for.

Zell am See (757 m) is located in the province of Salzburg
in the Austrian Alps and at a driving distance of
about one hour from the city of Salzburg. Zell am See belongs to the European Sports
Region. There are possibilities to go swimming, skiing,
rafting, canyoning, hiking and climbing, mountainbiking,
paragliding, ect.
The mountain lake, Zeller See, with drinking water quality
has a length of 3.8km and a width of 1.5 km. In the West you
will see the mountain "Schmittenhöhe" with an
hight of 1965 m and in the East the "Hundstein" with
an hight of 2117m . From the "Schmittenhöhe"
you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas over the
high mountain region.
