Abstract

Arsenal research has a long history of carrying out insitu tests of civil structures (dams, bridges, etc) and of fitting FE models to the test results. More than 20 years ago the first eccentric mass exciter was designed and built by arsenal. Since 1985 the first reaction mass exciter of arsenal was in use. A flat bed trailer was adopted in order to transport the reaction mass exciter. The trailer is equiped with a lifting jack mounted on a frame. The exciter can be lifted from the trailer and lowered to the object through a hole in the bottom plate.

Abstract

Fortunately, not every structure will really experience its design earthquake. Hence it is state of the art not to request a poor linear behaviour during a large earthquake but to allow the development of plastic hinges at certain locations, which have a sufficient rotational ductility due to a proper design (especially sufficient lateral confinement by stirrups). These plastic hinges should develop in beams close to the nodes and not in colums in order to avoid total collapses. Besides the plastic hinges the structure shall deform elastically. This strategy is called Capacity Design. Normally only a linear analysis is carried out and the results are reduced using a "behaviour factor", which depends on the structural type and on the applied measures in order to obtain a ductile behaviour.

Abstract

Since 1999 the project team arsenal research and TIWAG (Tirolean Waterpower) is involved into the railway project Unterinntal (lower Inn - valey). A new line with two tracks, mainly located in tunnels with a total length of about 40 km will be built until 2007. The project is one section of the new railway axis Munich - Verona. The line is errected by Brenner Eisenbahngeselschaft (BEG). The lower Inn-valley is densly populated, hence many buildings are very close to the new line. The task for the project team is the monitoring of vibrations and structure borne noise.

Abstract

BRIMOS is health care for bridges and other structures. Comparable to a patient seeing a medical doctor, measurements are taken by highly sensitive instruments, whose results are interpreted by an expert. The BRIMOS Recorder is such a sensitive instrument with the conception of simple use and operation. The diagnosis is taken by an expert through interpretation of the measurement results in combination with information about the patient (structure).
